US almost Confident of Syrian Regime’s Use of Chemical Weapons

ARA News

According to the US defense secretary, Chuck Hagel, it is believed that chemical weapons have been used recently in Syria’s war. Hagel revealed on Thursday that the Syrian régime’s forces have used the sarin gas against rebels.

Without specifying the area or date when the sarin gas was used in Syria, Hagel said: “The use was on small scale.”

“Our intelligence community does assess, with varying degrees of confidence, that the Syrian régime has used chemical weapons on a small scale in Syria, specifically, the chemical agent sarin,” he stated in a press conference during an official visit to Abu Dhabi.

The use of chemical weapons has been named by the White House as a ‘red line’ that cannot be crossed. The Obama administration did not recognize the statements made by the American intelligence regarding the use of sarin gas as a proof, which does not necessitates an American intervention yet.

John Kerry, US Secretary of State, revealed on Capitol Hill that ‘two instances’ of chemical weapons use in Syria have been detected.

The British Foreign Office issued a statement on Wednesday reportedly saying: “Material from inside Syria tested positive for sarin.”

In December 2012, the American President Barack Obama warned the Syria régime from using any kind of chemical weapons against the Syrian people, adding that the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will face serious consequences in a case of using such weapons.

According to reports, Syria obtains a large arsenal of chemical weapons, which represents a source of worry for the international community, especially given the fact that the use of such weapons will affect the neighboring countries as well.

On the other hand, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights recorded March as the bloodiest month of the uprising, in which more than 6.000 people were killed according to the observatory, including 500 women and children.
