Qamishli, Syria− Hundreds of supporters of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) participated in the funeral of a 28 Kurdish fighters of the Popular Protection Units (PYG) on Tuesday.
The YPG’s 28 fighters were killed during recent clashes with Islamist armed groups of Jabhat al-Nusra and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in towns of Tel Birak and Tel Hamis in Qamishli’s southern suburb, northeast of Syria.
The YPG −military arm of the Democratic Union Party (PYD)− called earlier on the residents of Qamishli to take part in its fighters funeral, who were buried in the city’s cemetry in Antariya neighbourhood.
Since nearly 18 months, the Kurdish forces of the YPG and Islamist groups are in conflict for control over Syria’s northeastern areas. Hundreds of fighters from both sides have been killed during the clashes, which still take place in different areas where Kurds constitute a majority of the population.
