Deir ez-Zor, Syria – Several Syrian rebel battalions in al-Shaheel area in Deir ez-Zor countryside pledged on Thursday allegiance to al-Qaeda offshoot group of the Islamic State (previously known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant ‘ISIL’), accepting ISIL militants to enter al-Shaheel town without resistance, local activists from Deir ez-Zor city stated to ARA News.

Wael al-Dakheel, civil activist from the city of Deir ez-Zor, told ARA News that al-Ikhlas Army, the Army of Islam, and the Islamic Army of Mutah are of the leading factions that pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, while fighters of al-Nusra Front refused swearing allegiance to the group, amid clashes between both sides in the vicinity of the town.

The agreement was held between the Islamic State (ISIL) and the People’s Committee of the town, allowing militants of the Islamic State to enter the town and establish a headquarter there, appointing one of its members as a leader.

The agreement also included those factions, which swore allegiance to the Islamic State, to keep their light and heavy weapons in their hands.

This comes a day after aerial bombardment of  al-Busaira town in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor by pro-Assad forces, which lead to the death of 8 civilians and the injury of dozens others.
