Al-Hasakah, Syria – Arab tribal residents of Geweran neighbourhood in Syria’s Hasakah took to the street on Thursday to show their support to the Islamic State (IS), chanting pro-IS slogans and calling on the group to back Ahrar Geweran gunmen against pro-Assad forces in Hasakah.
Geweran demonstrators also demanded IS militants (who are stationed in the southern countryside of Hasakah) to enter Geweran neighbourhood and fight the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG).
The YPG (linked to the Democratic Union Party ‘PYD’) carried out military operations against Geweran neighbourhood over the last few days, shelling the area with mortars. YPG’s attacks coincided with clashes against Ahrar Geweran armed group.
YPG-linked sources told ARA News that their operations “were aimed at defeating armed men linked to IS extremists”.
“We didn’t target civilians. All our operations were meant to capture IS-linked gunmen who try to open the door of Hasakah city to the Islamic State militants in order to control it, and it’s our duty to protect the city against this dangerous group,” a YPG fighter told ARA News on Wednesday.
However, local sources in Geweran reported to ARA News that the YPG and some pro-Assad military forces shelled residential buildings in the neighbourhood.
“We are getting killed. These forces are helling our houses without showing mercy to children and women. Thus we demand the Islamic State to enter the area and save us,” one of pro-IS demonstrators in Geweran told ARA News in Hasakah.
