Beirut, Lebanon – The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, stated that the American Administration should show respect to the sovereignty of Syria while attacking strongholds of the Islamic State (IS) there.
The Russian FM reportedly told his U.S. counterpart John Kerry in a phone call that the American decision to combat IS militants in Syria without coordination with the regime of President Bashar al-Assad will be a violation to Syria’s sovereignty.
Lavrov and Kerry talked on Sunday at the initiative of the US Secretary of State.
Lavrov issued a statement emphasizing that despite the “The importance of coordinated action… by the international community aimed at countering the threat of IS,” there remains “the necessity for strict adherence to the UN charter and international law as well as unconditional respect for Syrian sovereignty during the implementation of plans by the US-led coalition, which includes the use of force”.
A U.S.-led international coalition is expected to carry out air strikes against extremists of the Islamic State in areas of Syria and Iraq, to combat what was described “a threat to the world”.
