Hasakah, Syria – Volcker Cawdor, head of the ruling Christian Democratic Union, said that Germany does not rule out the possibility of supplying weapons to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) to fight militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS).

Cawdor, quoted by Der Spiegel, consider that this intervention (of supporting PKK) could put pressure on Turkey to intercede and protect the Kurdish city of Kobane in northern Syria against the attacks of IS militants.

“We understand the problems the Turkish authorities face regarding the PKK, but it’s not possible to simply watch how this extremist group controls the border cities one after the other, while it threatens global security,” Cawdor said.

At the same time, he stressed that any support provided by the German government to the PKK “must be done after coordination with Ankara”.

The PKK is listed by the EU and Turkey as a “terrorist organization”.

Germany has earlier supplied the Peshmerga forces of Iraqi Kurdistan with weapons and ammunition to fight against IS’ extremists.

On the other hand, Volker Beck, a German MP and representative of the opposition’s Greens Party, said in response to Cawdor’s statements that any support to the PKK will be  “a crime and might have legal consequences”, calling on Cawdor to “first work on submitting a petition to the German Interior Minister to look into the possibility of dropping the description of terrorism from the PKK”.

Notably, the German city of Dusseldorf witnessed a demonstration were more than 20 thousand Kurds took to the street in solidarity with the war-torn city of Kobane. Moreover, the German city of Hamburg saw clashes between Kurdish demonstrators and Islamist supporters of the IS extremists, according to the German media.
