Istanbul, Turkey – Salih Muslim, leader of the Democratic Union Party in Syria (PYD), demanded the Western countries to provide arms to the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) –military arm of the PYD– which is fighting the Islamic State (IS/ISIL) in northern Syria, especially in the border city of Kobane.
Muslim warned of potential massacres by IS extremists against Kurdish civilians and fighters of the YPG if they did not receive support in the coming days.
The PYD’s leader has also blamed Turkey of obstructing his efforts to obtain arms from the United States and the European Union, which refused his request, pointing out to Reuters that they (PYD) have sent a messages to the U.S. and EU “but there were obstacles”.
“Turkey and other countries prevent delivery of weapons to the Syrian Kurds because they do not want the Kurds to be able to defend themselves,” Muslim said.
He also described the situation in Kobane as “heavy fighting going on in the city and the Kurdish forces defending themselves and the city with light weapons in order to avoid a massacre in case that IS groups enter in the city of Kobane.
“IS militants will destroy everything in their way if they gain control of Kobane,” Muslim added.
Muslim also emphasized that Turkey prevents the Kurdish fighters (in reference to fighters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party PKK) from entering Kobane.
Meanwhile, dozens of Kurdish young men, who crossed into Turkey last week, returned to their hometown of Kobane on Tuesday to join the YPG forces and fight against IS militants.
Regarding the raids launched by the U.S.-led international coalition against the IS bases, Muslim stressed that they (The International Coalition forces) heavily coordinate with the Kurdish forces (Peshmerga) in Iraq, but they need to find strong partners on the ground in Syria (referring to YPG forces) to ensure the success of its strategy in eliminating the IS extremists.
The Kurdish city of Kobane has been besieged by IS militants for six months, and the group is currently closer than ever to the city. According to local sources, IS group is only 4 km away from the city.
