Damascus, Syria – On Monday morning, five nuclear scientists were killed in an attack by unknown assailants in the Barzeh neighborhood of northern Damascus, local sources reported.
“Four of them were Syrian and the fifth was Iranian,” said Ali Hammoud, a media activists based in Barzeh.
The five scientists were shot dead on Monday by gunmen in Barzeh neighborhood, which is controlled by the Syrian regime military forces.
No party has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
“The five scientists were killed while riding in a civilian car heading to the Scientific Research Center in the Barzeh neighborhood, north of Damascus,” Hammoud told ARA News.
According to observers, the assassination of the five scientists was an attempt to target Syrian-Iranian cooperation, which went beyond military and security concerns to reach coordination in terms of nuclear development.
Last year, an Israeli fighter jet targeted the Syrian center for scientific research in the Republican Guard’s division in Damascus. The operation claimed the lives of several scientists as well as an estimated 100 pro-Assad military officers and soldiers.
