Qamishli, Syria – The General Command of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) denied Wednesday the news about attacks by al-Nusra Front (al Qaeda branch in Syria) on the city of Afrin in Aleppo province, in northern Syria.

According to the YPG, the pro-Assad forces were engaged in clashes against al-Nusra Front in the countryside of Aleppo, “but the clashes didn’t reach the Afrin area, where our forces are in control”.

A member of the YPG’s General Command in Afrin told ARA News: “Since the beginning of the Syrian revolution against Assad’s rule, we were part of it and we struggled to achieve the aspirations of all Syrian social components in freedom and democracy.”

“We are still committed to our approach of supporting the revolution,” he said, preferring to stay anonymous.

During the last three days, the Shiite towns of Nubul and Zahraa in the Aleppo countryside were exposed to attacks by Islamist militants, causing the death of dozens and displacement of hundreds of civilians. The YPG was also accused of participating in these attacks, but the group’s leadership denied the news reports.

“Such rumors are baseless and only aim to distort our image and reputation. Those who try to spread rumors about our forces’ participation in such sectarian attacks should know that our fight is for the minorities, and our battles against the Islamic State’s militants are evidence for the YPG’s commitment to the revolutions’ objectives as we’re willing to sacrifice everything in order to eradicate all extremist groups on Syrian and Kurdish soil,” the YPG’s members told ARA News

“Our resistance in Kobane reflects the principles for which we decided to take up arms.”

Speaking to ARA News in Afrin, the political activist Serdar Melle Ali said that these militant factions are trying to drag the battles between the pro-regime forces and al-Nusra Front in the countryside of Aleppo to the Kurdish city of Afrin.

“Such attempts aim to put pressure on the Kurdish forces, especially after the international coalition decided to support the Kurds,” he added.
