Urfa, Turkey – The Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) carried out car bomb attacks Saturday morning at the Turkish border crossing of Mursitpinar near Syria’s Kobane. Four casualties from the Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) were reported.
Speaking to ARA News on the phone, the YPG fighter Jiwan Susik said that IS militants infiltrated from the Turkish territory to the Syrian side, following the Turkish army’s withdrawal from the area, stationing near the silos area on the Turkish side of the border.
“A suicide bomber, driving a can wired to explode, blew himself up at the Kobane crossing, killing four fighters of the YPG and injuring 14 others,” Susik added.
“The attack at the crossing led to the outbreak of fierce clashes between IS insurgents and YPG fighters,” he told ARA News.
“Several IS militants were killed in the clashes.”
Ezzedin Temmo, an officer in the Kurdish Peshmerga forces (who joined the Kobane conflict to support YPG against IS radicals) stated to ARA News that the defending forces of Kobane are in control of the crossing on the Syrian side, “while the IS terrorists are still stationed at the Turkish side of the crossing”.
Media activists from inside the city of Kobane published a video online showing IS militants on the Turkish side of the border crossing of Mursitpinar in the silos area.
The civil rights activist Barzan Khalil, based in Kobane, stated to ARA News on the phone that following the IS-led suicide bombing near Murshid Pinar crossing, the U.S.-led international coalition carried out an air strike on IS congregations in the vicinity of the crossing.
Khalil added that IS militants targeted the eastern and western neighborhoods of the city of Kobane with tens of mortars, coinciding with clashes between both parties in the al-Jamarik area.
The Turkish authorities, on the other hand, denied the news about IS using the Turkish territory for anti-Kobane attacks.
A statement by the office of the Turkish PM said: “It is known that the terrorist group ISIS has been attacking many places simultaneously in Kobane as well as the Mursitpinar border gate since this morning. One of these attacks was made in the Syrian side of the border by a bomb-laden vehicle. The allegation that the vehicle in the mentioned attack reached the border gate through Turkish land is an absolute lie.”
