Istanbul, Turkey – Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, called on the U.N. Security Council to take urgent and firm action to resolve the Syrian crisis, addressing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and all parties of the conflict to stop the killing and start a political solution.

Ki-moon said in a statement issued Friday that the U.N. Security Council was able to take effective actions when chemical weapons were used in Syria, and it must take urgent and strict procedures to get access for humanitarian assistance to the civilians in stricken areas.

The U.N. Secretary-General pointed out that the Syrian people feel the international isolation increasing as their crisis approaches its fifth year, adding: “We, as international community, should help the Syrian people, and assure them the serious crimes committed in Syria will not go unpunished.”

“Syria and its neighbors are still suffering, while the international community is divided and cannot take firm actions to stop this bloody war.”

He also warned of what he described as a “sudden collapse of Syria”, which would pose a threat to the entire region and the world, especially in the presence of terrorist groups.

The U.N. Secretary-General called on donor countries to provide “generous” funds to help the Syrian people and the neighboring countries in the donors’ conference to be held in Kuwait later this month.

Noteworthy, both Russia and China used the veto in more than one occasion against resolutions condemning the Syrian regime’s policy of besieging and starving the areas beyond its control as well as delaying the decision of the Security Council to refer the officials of the Syrian regime to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
