Tel Abyad, Syria – Kurdish fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and allied rebels of Burkan al-Furat were able to gain control of several strategic villages and hills south of Kobane in Aleppo province, northeastern Syria, military sources reported on Saturday.
Shervan Darwish, the spokesman of Burkan al-Furat rebels, reported that the joint forces took over several villages, including Dali Hassan, Tel Asodo Ras al-Ain and the surrounding hills.
“Our units regained control of several strategic villages and hills during their campaign under the banner ‘Revenge for Kobane Martyrs’,” he added.
Darwish pointed out that they took over the strategic villages of Hialah, Shkaif Janoubi, Shamal and Maghribtain, cutting the road between Sirrin town and Shuhada Bridge.
At least 14 IS militants were killed during clashes on Saturday, Darwish told ARA News.
Burkan al-Furat spokesman pointed out that the town of Sirrin is the last stronghold of Islamic State group in the countryside of Kobane. The town is considered a main supply line used by the group to link the eastern countryside of Aleppo with Raqqa.
The joint forces seized a large deal of weapons and ammunition from evacuated strongholds of IS south of Kobane.
Darwish said that the IS extremists tried Thursday night to infiltrate into the city through Sirrin Junction, “but our forces deterred the attack and forced the terrorists to retreat”.
On the other hand, the Kurdish journalist Baran Mesko, based in Kobane, told ARA News that the people of the village Ziravak (17 km south of Kobane) arrested at dawn on Friday an IS suspect who was handed over to the Kurdish security forces of the Asayish in Kobane.
