Hasakah, Syria – Despite the decline of Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) in Hasakah, some remaining militants still struggle to keep positions south of the city, local activists reported on Thursday.
IS radicals are stranded in the vicinity of az-Zuhour neighborhood and a number of government buildings near the Panorama roundabout in southern Hasakah.
This comes as clashes continue between Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and IS militants, coinciding with airstrikes and artillery bombardment by pro-regime forces on militants strongholds in Hasakah.
Speaking to ARA News in Hasakah, media activist Raman Hassan reported that fierce clashes broke out near the IS-held Panorama roundabout on Thursday.
“Kurdish fighters are locked in fierce clashes with the radical group near Panorama roundabout and az-Zuhour neighborhood. Most of IS militants were either killed or withdrew from the city of Hasakah, except a small group which is currently trying to find a way to escape before getting killed under the Kurdish fire,” Hassan said.
According to a YPG source, the clashes continued until Thursday midnight.
“We won’t stop our campaign before the entire city of Hasakah is liberated from the terrorists of IS,” a YPG fighter told ARA News.
