Damascus, Syria – Valdet Gashi, a former world champion kickboxer who has joined the ranks of the Islamic State militant group (IS/ISIL), was reportedly killed in Syria.
Gashi’s brother told Swiss media that Valdet was killed on Saturday.
The former world champion kickboxer had left his home and family in Germany to join IS ranks in Syria.
The circumstances of Gashi’s death remain unclear, according to his brother.
“The 29-year-old German of Albanian descent linked up with Islamic State militants in January,” Reuters reported.
“I’m trying to help build a modern calpihate in Syria,” he told Swiss television SRF in a telephone interview last month.
“If I die while doing good, I of course will be glad.”
According to U.N. reports, more than 20,000 foreign fighters are currently active in Syria and Iraq, where extremists of IS have taken over large areas.
