Qamishli, Syria – Kuwaiti authorities arrested Thursday a jihadist network belonging to the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS). The suspects have reportedly received military training and fought beside the radical group in Syria and Iraq, before arriving to Kuwait.
The Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior said in a statement that Kuwaiti security forces arrested a terrorist network linked to Daesh (IS), adding that the group members confessed they have been trained by IS and fought in its ranks in Syria and Iraq.
The ministry disclosed names of several arrestees, including Mubarak Malfi, Fahad Hamad, Mohammed Hamad, Faleh Nasser and Mohammed Falah, who were involved in terrorist operations in Iraq.
Speaking to ARA News, Egyptian political analyst Ashraf al-Jundi said that IS seeks to extend its geographical territory across the Middle East “in order to gain new resources and strengthen its position in the region”.
“Unfortunately, a considerable number of people accept IS presence in their areas due to their belief in the alleged caliphate, and this facilitates the radical group’s expansion,” he argued. “The group has been able to recruit thousands of young Muslims through its propaganda.”
Last June, IS claimed responsibility for the bombing of a Shi’ite mosque in the Kuwaiti capital. The attack left behind some 13 people dead and dozens others wounded, as the attack took place during Friday prayers.
