Hasakah, Syria – Subsequent to fierce battles with militants from the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS), Syrian regime forces reported advancement in Nashwa district in Hasakah city, northeastern Syria, local sources reported on Sunday.

Nashwa district has been under IS control for nearly two weeks.

A military source close to the Syrian regime told ARA News that the Syrian army, supported by allied forces, were able Sunday to control the Nashwa Sharqi neighborhood, and enter the Kahraba roundabout in the area.

Additionally, the military regained control of Layliya district and the building of Criminal Security branch.

“Pro-regime forces also regained the Central Prison and the Immigration Department of Hasakah near Geweran district,” a local source reported.

Speaking to ARA News in Hasakah, civil rights activist Adnan Hassan said that the Syrian warplanes and helicopters targeted Sunday afternoon several IS-held locations in Hasakah with rockets and barrel bombs.

“The airstrikes and barrel bombs forced IS fighters to withdraw from main strongholds,” Hassan said.

In the meantime, dozens of displaced families returned to their houses in Hasakah, local sources told ARA News on Sunday.
