Istanbul, Turkey – Three F-16 jets of the Turkish air force pounded targets of the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) in northern Syria, a government statement said on Friday.
This coincided with arresting some 300 suspected militants across the country.
The official statement stressed that the Turkish warplanes took off from the Diyarbakir airbase in southeast Turkey early on Friday, and conducted several strikes on IS fighting positions north Syria.
“The warplanes targeted with four missiles two IS strongholds in the northern countryside of Aleppo city,” the statement added, without mentioning further details on the operation or the outcomes, or whether Turkey intends to continue the anti-IS strikes.
According to leaked information, the targets included a command center for the radical group in northern Aleppo.
This is the first time that Turkish fighter jets conduct direct airstrikes against the radical group of IS inside Syrian territory since the start of the crisis, which was described by observers as a “dramatic development” in the Turkish position towards IS in neighboring Syria.
Local sources said that some 35 IS militants were killed in the Turkish strike on Friday. Authorities have not verified the losses of the radical group yet.
This operation come one day after IS militants killed a Turkish officer on the border with Syria.
