Urfa, Turkey – On Thursday, a Turkish military force was attacked in the Elbeyli sub-distrcit in the Turkish State of Kilis, from the Syrian side of the border which is held by the Islamic State (IS/ISIS), Turkish officials told reporters.
At least one officer was killed and four soldiers were injured during the attack, local sources reported without identifying the perpetrators.
The Turkish military responded to the source of fire inside the Syrian territory. The attackers are believed to be from the IS group, according to media reports.
“At about 4 pm of Thursday afternoon, a Turkish force was exposed to fierce fire from Syrian territory that is under control of the Islamic State group. The Turkish soldiers responded to the sources of fire,” Dogan agency reported.
The agency added that a Turkish officer was killed and four others wounded in the exchange of fire with unidentified gunmen, and were transferred to the Kilis governmental hospital.
The Turkish army sent urgent reinforcements to the Syrian border. The enforcements included soldier units, tanks and armored vehicles.
“The clashes led to the death of an officer, while four soldiers were injured and transferred immediately to Kilis hospital,” said Tubbsaz Suleiman, governor of Kilis State.
Clashes continued until Thursday evening between Turkish army forces and the gunmen near the Syrian border city of Azaz.
The Turkish Gen. Jamal al-Din Duggan is reportedly leading the military operations in southern Kilis, as several (F 16) warplanes took off from the city of Diyarbakir (Amed) towards the clashes area, amid intensified security measures.
