Aleppo, Syria – Rebels of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) exchanged hostages with the militant group of Islamic State (IS/ISIS) in Aleppo province, north Syria, opposition sources reported on Wednesday.
After negotiations between the FSA and IS leadership on possible exchange of hostages held by both parties, they reached an agreement of releasing four hostages each.
“Dozens of FSA rebels have been taken as hostages by Daesh (IS) during clashes in the northern countryside of Aleppo in June. FSA was able later on to abduct several Daesh militants in order to put pressure on the group to release its fighters,” said Abu al-Majd Komala, a FSA fighter.
Komala told ARA News that the exchange of hostages took place in the village of Harjala, north of Aleppo.
“Our fighters who were freed are Ahmed Yousef, Mahir Jouma, Abdulhamid Majeed and Muhammad Sadiq,” he added.
Militants of the Islamic State hold several areas north of Syria’s Aleppo, including Marea and Umm al-Housh, following fierce clashes with Syrian rebels.
