Cairo – The extremist group of Islamic State (IS/ISIS) claimed responsibility for an explosion that claimed lives of 29 people, including six policemen, in Cairo on Thursday.
Insurgents of IS in Sinai issued a statement that circulated on social media claiming responsibility for Cairo attack.
The blast took place on Thursday afternoon near the building of the Egyptian national security agency in Shubra al-Khaima neighborhood, north Cairo.
Local sources said that the sound of the explosion echoed across Eyptian capital, rattling windows and waking residents miles from the blast’s location.
Part of the building’s concrete facade was blown off, and adjacent apartment buildings were also damaged, with shattered windows and twisted metal railings dangling from balconies.
Egypt’s interior ministry said in a statement that a car had exploded outside the security compound.
“The assailant fled the scene on a motorcycle,” it said.
