Qamishli, Syria – Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) regained a strategic town in Hasakah province, northeast Syria, after fierce clashes with militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS), military sources reported on Thursday.
Fighters of the YPG seized control of al-Bahra al-Khatouniyah town near al-Hawl city in the eastern countryside of Hasakah, a Kurdish military source told ARA News.
“Our (YPG) fighters, supported by the U.S.-led coalition’s forces, launched an attack on IS headquarters in the strategic town of al-Bahra al-Khatouniyah. After fierce clashes, the terrorist group withdrew from the town on Thursday evening,” said Habun Osman, a YPG fighter.
At least eight IS militant fighters were killed during the clashes.
After regaining al-Bahra al-Khatouniyah, the Kurdish forces aim to seize control of the al-Hawl city in order to eliminate IS group from the eastern countryside of Hasakah.
Al-Hawl is considered one of the strategic areas for the Islamic State due to its location on the Iraqi border. The city has been used by the radical group as a supply line for military reinforcements from IS-held areas in Iraq to Syria and for oil shipments between both countries.
