Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan – Kurdish forces of the Peshmerga freed seven villages from militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) in northern Iraq after fierce clashes, Kurdish sources said on Saturday.
Backed by the US.-led coalition’s airstrikes, Peshmerga army forces reportedly regained more than 200 square kilometers near the town of Tuz in the past four days.
The U.S. Central Command confirmed the news, saying the Peshmerga’s advancement came after the coalition conducted a total of 25 airstrikes on ISIS fighting positions, “which helped the Peshmerga forces to liberate seven villages”.
Meanwhile, Peshmerga and allied Iraqi forces expelled ISIS militants from the strategic highway that links Kirkuk with Baghdad.
Speaking to ARA News, a Kurdish military source reported that the Peshmerga, supported by Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces, regained the Kirkuk-Baghad strategic highway after clashes with ISIS militants.
