Erbil, Kurdistan Region – Kurdish forces of the Peshmerga regained new areas in the vicinity of Kirkuk city after clashes with militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS), Kurdish sources in Iraqi Kurdistan reported on Wednesday.
“Our forces attacked strongholds of ISIS in Daqouq town near Kirkuk and regained southern parts of the town after the withdrawal of the militants under heavy shelling by the Peshmerga,” a statement by the Peshmerga army said.
The Kurdish forces also regained the village of al-Bu Najm in Kirkuk suburb, the Peshmerga said on Wednesday.
“The clashes continued until Wednesday evening,” the source said.
This coincided with airstrikes by the U.S.-led coalition’s warplanes on ISIS fighting positions near Kirkuk.
At least 12 ISIS militants were killed and 33 more wounded in Wednesday’s operations.
Speaking to ARA News in Kirkuk, Barzani Ahmed, a member of the Peshmerga, said: “Our forces also liberated Diwayzat village in Makhmur area, west of Erbil, after clashes with terrorists of Daesh (ISIS) on Tuesday.”
