Aleppo, Syria – Syrian rebel fighters of al-Shamiya Front seized new areas, including a gas station, after launching an offensive on strongholds of the Islamic State radical group (IS/ISIS) in the northern countryside of Aleppo, military sources reported on Thursday.
Speaking to ARA News, Shamiya commander Saleh al-Zein said their forces gained strategic locations north of Aleppo after clashes with IS militants.
“We launched an extended military operation against Daesh (IS) in the northern countryside (of Aleppo). After clashes with the terrorist group, our (Shamiya) fighters seized the villages of Khirbat Ghazalla and Qara Mazraa east of Azaz city, in addition to the gas station near the Turkish border,” the commander said.
According to al-Zein, at least three IS militants were killed and four others were taken hostages by Shamiya rebels on Thursday.
“Our fighters also seized a large deal of weapons and ammunition from Daesh following the clashes,” he said, adding that the rebel operation in northern Aleppo will continue “until eliminating Daesh terrorists from the area”.
Meanwhile, the U.S.-led international coalition forces targeted IS headquarters in the towns of Soran Azaz, Dabiq and Akhtarin, causing the death of several militants and the destruction of four armored vehicles, local sources said on Thursday.
