Urfa, Turkey – Some 918 fighters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) have been killed since the start of the Turkish military operations against the group last month, Turkish army said on Thursday.
Turkish army officials told reporters in Ankara that the anti-PKK operations included ground battles and airstrikes, forcing the Kurdish fighters to withdraw from their strongholds in southeastern Turkey and northern Iraq.
“918 PKK militants have been killed during operations by our army forces inside and outside Turkey,” a Turkish official said, describing the death toll as “one of the heaviest losses in the history of the terrorist group (in reference to PKK)”.
The source added that more than 580 PKK members have been injured in the recent strikes by the Turkish army, beside the destruction of several PKK machine guns.
On the other hand, the army said that 60 Turkish soldiers and security forces have been killed in PKK-led attacks in the last few weeks.
