HASAKAH – Since the emergence of the Islamic State (ISIS), dozens of Arab tribal leaders have pledged allegiance to the radical group in Syria and Iraq, welcoming ISIS militants to enter their areas and take over public institutions without any resistance.

“Many influential Sunni tribal leaders in the Iraqi provinces of Anbar and Nineveh, and the Syrian provinces of Deir ez-Zor and Hasakah, have swore allegiance to the terror group over the past few months,” civil rights activist Omar Sayyed told ARA News.

The ISIS Media Office published images on Sunday showing several Arab tribal figures swearing allegiance to the extremist group in a ceremony in the village of Ghariba in southern Hasakah, northeastern Syria.

This comes as the U.S.-led coalition has intensified its airstrikes on ISIS positions in Syria and Iraq.

“A group of notable Arab tribal leaders pledged allegiance to the Caliphate,” ISIS-linked Media Office in Hasakah reported, commenting on a photo for Arab figures published online.

Speaking to ARA News in Hasakah, media activist Abu Maria al-Mashhadani said: “ISIS is trying to compensate its losses –under airstrikes by the U.S.-led coalition and in battles with Kurdish forces– through propaganda and media campaigns to raise morale of its members.”

“The terror group has attracted a large number of Sunni Arab tribal figures to its ranks by promising them to obtain significant positions under the umbrella of the alleged caliphate,” said al-Mashhadani.

The source pointed out that ISIS has celebrated the loyalty of those tribes in Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor on several occasions in the recent months.

Among the prominent Arab clans that have pledged allegiance to the extremist group are the Jibour, Aqidat, Sharabin and Baggara.

Last week, the ISIS-linked Media Office released several footages showing Arab tribal leaders in Anbar and Nineveh while pledging allegiance to the extremist group amid the attendance of senior militants of ISIS.
