ISTANBUL – In response to the deadly attacks of Paris by the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) two weeks ago, a Belgian group under the banner of “The Christian State” has emerged.
The so-called “Christian State” group threatens to kill Belgian Muslims, destroy their businesses.
The at-Tadamun mosque in the Belgian capital Brussels has received a threatening letter from the so-called “Christian State” group, vowing that all Muslims will be killed, and their businesses will be destroyed outright, according to French and Belgian media reports.
“No mosque and none of your businesses will be safe. All Muslims will be slaughtered like pigs and crucified as our Lord converts their souls,” French daily Le Parisien quoted the group as saying.
The letter was delivered to the mosque on Monday in the Molenbeek district in Brussels, where the suspects of Paris attacks originated.
“We will avenge our brothers (French victims) who fell in the Paris attacks,” the group added.
Jamal Habbachich, a local Muslim cleric and head of the Molenbeek’s mosque association, found the letter. He asked for police patrols to protect the Muslims in the city’s mosques.
“We will naturally turn to the authorities of our country and complain to the police. Because such a letter implies two meanings: either this is a document written by someone wacky unbalanced, or it’s a very serious threat,” Habbachich told reporters in Brussels.
“The author of the letter is unidentified, but apparently he uses terminology similar to that of the Islamic State group,” he added.
Some reports indicate that other mosques in the region received similar threats from the same group.
A video published by Le Parisien shows Habbachich printing a copy of the letter, carrying the initials E.C., or “Etat Chrétien” (Christian State). EC, or “Etat Chrétien,” which means in English “Christian State.”
The mosque is deemed as a key Muslim institute in Molenbeek. But it has been a suspicious place after some reports indicated it received suspects linked to the Paris attacks.
“Islamic State” and “Christian State” are two sides of the same coin, according to monitoring groups.
Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said last week that the government might close down “certain radical mosques” in the district.
The government ended a four-day lockdown in Brussels on Wednesday after authorities lowered the threat level.
