ALEPPO – Russian fighter jets bombed on Saturday a prison complex in Syria’s northwestern province of Idlib, killing more than 50 people and wounding dozens more, local sources reported.
The targeted jail, which is run by Islamist rebels of al-Qaeda branch in Syria the Nusra Front, is located near a popular market in Maarat al-Numan town in Idlib province.
“The Russian bombardment caused the death of at least 18 civilians, six detainees and more than 30 Nusra members,” spokesman of the Idlib Documentation Center Luay Hamdan told ARA News.
“The civil defense activists have so far pulled some 40 wounded people from the rubble,” Hamdan reported. “Some of them are seriously injured and suffer critical conditions.”
Rebels of the Islamic Movement of Ahrar al-Sham and Nusra Front have taken over Idlib nearly one year and a half ago after fierce battles with Syrian regime forces. Since then, hundreds of airstrikes hit the province, claiming lives of thousands of people, mostly civilians.
