The Spanish police on Saturday arrested a couple suspected of having links with the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS), officials said.
A Moroccan man and a Spanish woman were arrested in the southern Spanish port of Algeciras on Saturday “as they were trying to leave for Morocco with their young son”, Spain’s interior ministry said in a statement.
The two suspects were reportedly part of a pro-ISIS terror cell that has recruited and sent jihadi fighters to ISIS territories in Syria.
“The couple were part of a group that supported and recruited ISIS fighters, including individuals that had carried out suicide bomb attacks in Syria,” the ministry said.
The statement added that the man’s brother had recently carried out a suicide bomb attack, “and that was the reason why the couple were travelling to Morocco in a hurry”.
“Their son has been put in care,” it said.
