HASAKAH – The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Friday expressed Russia’s concern about the targeting of Kurdish civilians by militants o the Islamic State (ISIS) and Jabhat al-Nusra. Over 1,000 Kurdish civilians have been kidnapped by ISIS in northern Aleppo, according to local activists.
“For their part, ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra are continuing their acts of intimidation against civilians,” Zakharova said.
“For example, in the Aleppo province, ISIS militants are targeting ethnic Kurds. According to Kurdish activists, over the past week, terrorists took hostage about 800 people, killing 11 and injuring over 20 as they tried to escape,” she added.
The Syrian Kurds held demonstrations in several cities like Derik, Qamishli, and Derbasiya calling on the international community to end their silence towards violations against Kurdish civilians in northern Aleppo–also known as the Shahba region.
Moreover, the Russian spokeswoman said the Kurds are advancing in Aleppo. “Kurdish armed groups are advancing near the Manbij area in the north of the Aleppo province. They have significantly expanded their control over the city perimeter, freeing a number of local villages from terrorists,” she added.
She also claimed that according to local media reports, four US military advisors were injured with rocket fragments following a jihadist attack in northern Syria. This is however not confirmed by the Pentagon.
“On the whole, we believe that the difficult situation in Syria requires the consolidation of all patriotic forces of that country by maintaining and strengthening the ceasefire in the intra-Syrian confrontation and at the same time building up efforts in the fight against terrorists and eradicating their base on Syrian soil,” Zakharova said.
The United States government has said that Washington is willing to work with Moscow in anti-ISIS campaign.
“We’ve made no bones about the fact that – and we’ve said it many times, that if the Russians with their military presence in Syria prove to be willing to focus those efforts against Daesh, well, that’s a conversation that we’d be willing to have,” US state department spokesperson John Kirby said on Thursday.
