MANBIJ – Turkey will end up as the Syrian regime in Hasakah if it invades the city of Manbij, spokesman of the Kurdish forces of People’s Protection Units (YPG) Redur Xelil said on Sunday.
Manbij city was recently liberated by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) from militants of the Islamic State (ISIS). Also, the Kurds expelled Syrian regime forces from major headquarters in Hasakah city after one of week of clashes that followed heavy attacks on Kurdish neighbourhoods in the city.
Turkish officials said on Sunday that if the Kurdish forces didn’t withdraw from the Syrian territories at the western bank of the Euphrates, especially Manbij, Turkey will take it.
Moreover, video’s published on the internet showed pro-Turkish Euphrates Shield Brigade rebels saying they would take Manbij, and one even said the rebels would march towards ‘Ayn al Islam’, the ISIS name for Kobane.
Also, a leading commander of the Turkish-backed Sultan Murad brigade suggested they are prepared to head towards Manbij.
The People’s Protection Units (YPG) spokesperson warned Turkey they would face the same fate as the Syrian regime, that was defeated in a one-week-battle in the northeastern Hasakah city.
“As the Baath regime drank the cup of poison, it will be necessary that Turkey drinks the same coup of poison in Manbij and Jarabulus,” Xelil said.
“By occupying Jarabulus, Turkey is not trying to fight ISIS but to help the terror group, and prevent our forces from continuing their operations,” he added.
Then Kurdish official also accused Turkey of having gained millions of dollars from oil trade with ISIS in the past through Tal Abyad border crossing. “30 million dollars monthly,” he said.
