Daraa – Syrian rebels shelled a regime-held district in the southern city of Daraa on Tuesday. Activists reported that a half-dozen children were among the fatalities.

Rebel fighters bombarded the al-Sahary neighborhood in Daraa, hitting a primary school.

“A rocket fired by the rebels hit a school in al-Sahary, killing at least eight people, including six school children,” local media activist Ali Hamdan told ARA News. More than 20 others were wounded.

“The shelling caused massive destruction to the school and the surrounding residential buildings,” Hamdan added.

The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) also reported on the attack. SANA said that “terrorists” had intentionally bombed the school in order “to terrify people in government-held areas.”

Rebel fighters and Islamist groups control most of Daraa Governorate. However, President Assad’s government still controls the majority of Daraa city.
