The US-led coalition will continue to work with both Turkey and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) towards the common goal of destroying the Islamic State (ISIS), a senior US State Department official said on Monday.
“ISIS is the common enemy of Turkey and all of the partners we work with in Syria. While we will not discuss future operations, we will continue to work with all of our partners until ISIS is defeated,” the US State Department official told ARA News. “Unity of focus on ISIS over the coming days and weeks is imperative.”
The official would not confirm any details of future operations in Raqqa or al-Bab. He also refused to say if the United States would choose between supporting the Turkey-backed Euphrates Shield rebels or the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
“At this time, we are not going to comment on the details of the operation that will eventually take [Raqqa] away from ISIS though as we have long said, in order to deliver ISIS a lasting defeat it is important that local forces are involved in such operations,” he said.
“We will continue to plan with all our partners on future operations that will push toward Raqqa and maintain pressure on ISIS,” the official said.
