Hasakah – The Syrian people received 2017 as the war enters its sixth year and the killing machine continues to claim more civilian lives.

In different parts of war-torn Syria, people celebrated the New Year’s Eve hoping the war would end anytime soon and the displaced would return home.

In the multi-ethnic Hasakah Governorate in northeastern Syria, Kurds, Arabs, Assyrians, Syriacs and Armenians celebrated the New Year’s Eve and the central marketplace was crowded for the first time in a while.

The people expressed hopes for the war to end and stability to return soon in Syria.

Unlike other parts of the war-torn country, Hasakah has been enjoying a relative stability since the expulsion of ISIS about a year ago at the hands of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Jan Khantershyan, an Armenian Christian citizen of Hasakah, told ARA News: “We thank everyone who helped to regain security to Hasakah, and we hope all the displaced people would soon return home, including our relatives and friends.”

Hewler Hesso, a Kurdish citizen, said: “We are full of hope that the destruction would stop in our country.”

“We aspire for tolerance and peace,” she told ARA News. “We visited the church and prayed for everyone in this country. We hope the new year would bear more peace and stability for our country and people.”

Ghana Shamoun, an Assyrian Christian, also hoped for peace to prevail in whole Syria.

“As we celebrate Christmas and the New Year’s Eve, we remind ourselves of Jesus and his message of peace. We hope our prayers would be heard and peace would prevail in Syria,” Shamoun said.
