The United States Special Forces conducted a ground operation in eastern Syria, targeting a senior member of the extremist Islamic State group (ISIS), officials said on Friday.
The commando raid, which took place in the town of al-Mayadin in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor province, led to the death of the top ISIS jihadist Abdurakhmon al-Uzbeki.
“It was a ground operation. I think that’s all we’re willing to say about that,” US Central Command spokesman John Thomas said in Washington in relation to Friday’s attack.
Al-Uzbeki, believed to be from Uzbekistan, was a close associate to the ISIS supreme leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
According to reports, al-Uzbeki played a key role in an attack on a night club in Istanbul on New Year’s Eve which killed 39 people.
The US and allied forces in Syria and Iraq have recently taken out several senior members of the ISIS radical group.
