Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan – Akon, the American hip-hop artist, is reportedly planning to perform a charity concert in Iraqi Kurdistan’s Capital, Erbil, next March.
Akon’s concert is set to benefit the Kurdish forces of the Peshmerga, who are combatting extremists of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) in the region.
On Thursday, the American artist released a video expressing his excitement and happiness to perform a charity concert in Erbil.
“I am so excited to visit Erbil, an 8,000 year old city, and perform live at the Hariri Stadium,” the artist said.
In this regard, Kurdish politician Saeed Hamkari told ARA News that Akon’s gesture is encouraging for the Kurds who are embattling the radical group of the Islamic State .
“We appreciate Akon’s decision to hold a charity concert in Erbil on behalf of the Peshmerga under the current conditions,” Hamkari said.
“Any kind of international support helps the Kurdish people to continue their struggle against terrorism. The IS group is the enemy of humanity, and showing such a solidarity with our Kurdish fighters reflects our unity as humans against the brutality of this terrorist group.”
Akon’s concert is meant to raise funds for families of the Peshmerga soldiers.
