Tel Abyad, Syria– On Tuesday, the General Command of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) released a statement announcing the end of its military operations in Tel Birak city in Hasaka province after the locals and tribal leaders pledged to secure the city themselves.

The Kurdish YPG forces −military wing of the Democratic Union Party (PYD)− had taken control over Tel Birak city two weeks ago after clashes with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). The YPG had carried out military operations against the ISIL in the city seeking revenge for the killing of its fighters in an ambush by the ISIL in Tel Birak and Tel Hamis cities, near Qamishli in northeastern Syria.

The statement released by the General Command of YPG said that the YPG forces withdrew from the city for the sake of the historical Arab-Kurdish brotherhood bonds, and after Tel Birak’s residents pledged to secure the city themselves.

“The YPG started its military operations in Tel Birak at the request of the inhabitants of the city in order to protect them and the region from the terrorist groups, and in order to destroy their strongholds and prevent them from carrying out terrorist attacks on the peaceful cities and villages of the region,” the YPG General Command said. “Our operations also came to eliminate any attempts at fomenting sedition among the social components of the region and to prevent the terrorist groups from taking Tel Birak and the surrounding areas as a starting point for carrying out their terrorist attacks which target the civil peace in the region.”

According to the YPG General Command, the inhabitants of Tel Birak “have the duty to protect their city and not to allow terrorists to turn it into a den for their terrorist operations”.

The General Command called on the residents of the area (northeastern Syria) to support their (YPG) forces and help them carry out their mission embodied in “the fight to maintain stability and safe living conditions for the region’s residents”, according to the statement.

YPG’s General Command emphasized that they (Kurdish YPG forces) would not hesitate to strike the “terrorists” again in accordance with their historical and national responsibility, if they (terrorists) happen to jeopardize the security state in the area.

Notably, the YPG forces had taken control over Tel Birak city two weeks ago after clashes with ISIL fighters and fighters of the al-Nusra Front and Ahrar al-Sham Movement.
