Urfa, Turkey– The Qaeda splinter group of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) delivered on last Wednesday the dead body of the media activist al-Moataz Bellah Ibrahim to his family after executing him three days before in Tel Abyad city in Raqqa province.

Al-Moataz Bellah Ibrahim, who worked as a news correspondent for the Sham News Network, was detained by the ISIL for three months, according to several sources from Tel Abyad city who talked to ARA News.

Ibrahim, 21 years old, came from the countryside of Aleppo and lived in Raqqa city. He was kidnapped by the ISIL for unknown reasons and was executed together with a cousin of him who was called Marwan Ismail, according to local sources.

Noteworthy, the ISIL recently distributed pamphlets with a list which contained the names of media activists and news providers in Tel Abyad city whom the ISIL apparently seek for retribution on the background of reporting about the ISIL violations against civilians in Tel Abyad city and its countryside. According to local media reports from the city of Raqqa, the ISIL allocated an amount of 20 million Syrian pounds for anybody who delivers a media activist in the city of Raqqa to them.

Notably, the violations against media activists and news providers by the different sides of the conflict in Syria recently increased. The violations, according to monitoring civil organizations, included kidnapping, killing and expelling.

On the 1st of this May, Reporters Without Borders released a report concerning the “growing abuses perpetrated against Syrian news providers”, mainly by the security and military forces of the PYD in areas which fall under its control in north and northeastern Syria. The report called on the PYD “as the authority responsible for that part of the country (areas where Kurds constitute a majority) to ensure that basic freedoms, including freedom of information, are respected”.
