Urfa, Turkey – On Thursday, IS-linked activists published a video online showing dozens of Yezidis gathered in the Shingal area of Nineveh province, in northern Iraq, claiming their conversion to Islam.
Militants of the Islamic State (IS), an al-Qaeda offshoot, took over the Yezidi-majority area of Shingal three weeks ago.
In the video tape, one of the princes of the IS group talked about the situation of Yezidis in Shingal saying that media outlets exaggerated the way IS group treated the Yezidi people.
“Many Yezidi families converted to Islam, including women, children and elders. They told the Mujahideen of the Islamic State ‘You have come too late!’ as if they wished our arrival for a long time,” IS prince said.
“Escaping their homes and staying in the mountains is not a solution, they are all invited to convert to Islam and live peacefully under the protection of the Islamic State,” the IS prince in Shingal said. “We are willing to provide them with everything, including shelter and protection.”
“All Yezidis are advised to leave the mountains and submit to the Islamic State; this way they will avoid the fire of hell in the afterlife. Staying in the mountains will cause them death of hunger and thirst,” the IS prince added.
The video tape showed dozens of young Yezidis stepping off a bus and walking beside an anti-aircraft gun vehicle, hugging fighters of the Islamic State, and then uttering the “Shahada” as a condition to enter Islam. This took place in a hall covered with IS black flags and one of the IS leaders teaching them the Shahada and praying with them.
One of the IS leaders addressed a group of Yezidis crowded in the hall saying: “You are now identified as infidels, but after announcing the Shahada, ‘there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah’, you will become Muslims and our brothers.”
“You (Yezidis) will have the same duties and rights as we do,” said the IS leader.
In their turn, the gathered Yezidis talked about “The blessing of Islam“, calling on the rest of the Yezidis to return to their areas and convert to the Islamic religion.
