Kobane, Syria – Strongholds of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) in the Qara Qozak area near Syria’s Kobane were hit by air strikes on Saturday morning, local sources reported.
The sources added the warplanes which launched the attacks were most likely of foreign forces.
This comes amid the formation of a U.S.-led international coalition to combat IS militants in Syria and Iraq.
Local activists told ARA News that the ‘unidentified’ warplanes bombed IS-held areas near Qara Qozak Bridge on the road of Manbij and Kobane, and in the nearby village of Jaada.
Although activists stressed that the Syrian air force never approach the area, regime-linked news agency of SANA reported that the pro-Assad airforce has carried out operations against IS-held areas near Kobane.
On the other hand, the western and eastern countryside of Kobane saw violent clashes on Friday night between the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) –military arm of the Democratic Union Party (PYD)– and the Islamic State group, in each of the Mahmudiyah villages in the eastern countryside of the city, as well as Taalik and Dakirman villages in the western countryside.
Various kinds of weapons were used in Kobane’s clashes, activists reported.
Noteworthy, the recent developments came after the announcement of the formation of the Joint Operations Chamber of Burkan al-Furat (volcano of Euphrates) between the YPG and factions of the opposition forces, and after remarks by the Amercan President Barack Obama that the U.S. will not hesitate to bomb locations of the Islamic State in Syria.
The Kurdish majority city of Kobane has been besieged by IS militant fighters for nearly six months.
