Erbil, Kurdistan Region – Under the banner “We Want Them Back”, a group of Lebanese mothers whose sons are fighting in the ranks of Hezbollah protested on Wednesday in southern Beirut to demand an immediate return of their sons from Syria.
Hundreds of Hezbollah fighters have been killed in Syria after being engaged in fighting against Syrian opposition factions.
According to military sources, the Shiite militia of Hezbollah has been backing pro-Assad forces in military operations against rebels in various areas across Syria, through sending thousands of militants supported with heavy weapons to fight in Syria.
Speaking to ARA News, Lebanese human rights activist Samir Aqaba said that a number of mothers of Hezbollah’s fighters who are fighting in the Syrian Qalamoun, held a sit-in in southern Beirut and demanded Hezbollah’s leadership to bring their sons back home, “especially that many of them are underage”.
“Some mothers stressed that they lost contact with their sons for some time, demanding the militia to disclose their fate, especially those who are locked in the fighting fronts of Qalamoun against rebels of al-Fatih Army (an extended umbrella for Syrian rebels),” Aqaba added.
On the other hand, Lebanese media sources close to Hezbollah reported that the women gathered in the southern suburb “show support to the militia’s fighters”.
Hezbollah has recently begun a broad attack on major strongholds of the al-Fatih Army forces in the strategic Qalamoun area, which aligns the Lebanese areas where Hezbollah enjoys popularity, such as Baalbek and Hermel in Lebanese Bekaa region.
