Hasakah, Syria – Subsequent to the withdrawal of pro-regime forces from major headquarters in Hasakah city, militant fighters of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) were able Saturday to infiltrate into parts of the Kurdish neighborhood of Aziziyah and al-Ghazl district in the Syrian northeastern city of Hasakah.

Local activists told ARA News that IS sleeper cells in Aziziyah and al-Ghazl took control of the eastern parts of the neighborhoods, and demanded people to pledge allegiance to Islamic State.

Militants also targeted a security checkpoint in al-Ghazl district with a car bomb, causing casualties in the ranks of pro-reigme forces.

ARA News could not verify the death toll among pro-regime forcers.

Amid IS advance in different neighborhoods of Hasakah, hundreds of families escaped the city heading to nearby areas of Qamishli, Amuda and Derbassiyah near the Turkish border.

Speaking to ARA News, civil rights activist Ghassan Mohammed said that dozens of Kurdish fighters from the People’s Protection Units (YPG) were deployed in the neighborhoods of Aziziyah and al-Ghazl in an attempt to stop IS advance, after the withdrawal of pro-regime forces from the security checkpoints in the surrounding districts.

“The Kurdish forces took control of the National Hospital in the Aziziyah neighborhood and the nearby School of Nursing, following the withdrawal of pro-regime forces,” Mohammad reported.

Noteworthy, the pro-regime forces stationed in the Jabal Kawkab base (10 km east of Hasakah) continuously targeted the group’s locations with heavy artillery in the past two days. The shelling centered in the Nashwa Gharbiya and al-Alaf neighborhoods south of Hasakah, in an attempt to cut off IS supply routes from the city of Shaddadi.
