Urfa, Turkey – At least eight Syrians were reportedly killed when Turkish border guards opened fire against them on Tuesday. The civilians were trying to cross into Turkey through the western areas of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) city, in Hasakah province, northeastern Syria.

Speaking to ARA News on the phone, aid worker Khabat Simmo said: “The Turkish border guards attacked civilians to prevent them from crossing the border, killing more than eight people including women and children.”

According to the source, a group of Syrians were trying to enter Turkey illegally on Tuesday, after escaping their war-torn areas in Hasakah province.

“The Turkish border police never take into account the risks those people are exposed to in their hometowns due to ISIS attacks,”said Salman Alo, a Kurdish media activist. “The border police have killed hundreds of Syrian at the borderline with Syria in the past four years.”

ARA News documented the death of more than 30 Syrian citizens in 2014, beside cases of torture at Turkish border detention centers.
