Kobane, Syria – Over the past two days, fierce clashes continued between Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and militant fighters of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) in the southern countryside of Kobane, northern Syria.
This coincided with airstrikes conducted by the U.S.-led coalition’s warplanes against IS fighting positions in the area.
Dozens of IS militants were killed during the operations, military sources reported on Wednesday.
Speaking to ARA News on the phone, Haboun Osman, a YPG fighter, said that IS terrorists launched an attack on locations of the joint forces (YPG and allied Syrian rebels) south of Kobane, “in the area stretching from Qara Qozak Bridge to Mijbil town, and in the vicinity of Sabit village and Sirrin Silos”.
“Also, the group launched several attacks on our headquarters in the towns of Aliya and Suluk in the past two day, which led to fierce clashes between the terrorist group and our forces,” he added.
Osman explained that the clashes culminated on Tuesday, “but the joint forces were able to deter IS progress and kill dozens of them with the support of the coalition’s air strikes”.
“The clashes are still ongoing in these areas. we are trying to fortify the southern countryside of Kobane in order to repel IS attacks,” the source told ARA News.
Shervan Darwish, spokesman of Burkan al-Furat rebels, announced that IS terrorists attacked Tuesday night the Qara Qozak Bridge, al-Mijbil and the village of Kidada, which led to clashes between the radical group and the joint forces.
“We found more than 30 IS corpses in the clashes locations on Tuesday evening,” he reported.
