Aleppo, Syria – On Thursday, clashes hit Syria’s Aleppo between rebels of the Shamiya Front and the pro-regime forces, local activists reported.

The armed opposition fighters of Shamiya tried to regain areas in Aleppo province, but they were faced by the heavy artillery of Syrian army forces.

Also on Thursday, pro-regime forces bombed several neighborhoods in the city of Aleppo and its countryside, using rocket launchers and barrel bombs in order to suspend progress of the opposition fighters.

The regime-led bombardment of Aleppo neighborhoods claimed lives of a number of civilians. locals reported.

Speaking to ARA News in Aleppo, media activist Wael Mohammed said that the armed opposition fighters advanced in the fronts of ar-Rashideen and Halab Jadida districts, and targeted pro-regime security checkpoints with heavy machine guns and mortars.

“The armed opposition fighters continued progress towards the strategic building of Scientific Research, imposing a blockade as a prelude to storm it,” he added.

Abdul Qader Mohammed, a field commander in the Shamiya Front, told ARA News: “In the coming few days, our (rebel) fighters will hit essential headquarters of pro-Assad forces in Aleppo.”

In the meantime, the northern countryside of Aleppo saw renewed strikes by pro-Assad warplanes on Thursday evening.

“Pro-Assad warplanes targeted the towns of Taqad, Huraytan and Kafr Hamra in the northern countryside of Aleppo, killing four civilians and injuring dozens others,” activist Alaa Jaafartold ARA News in Aleppo.

“Also, pro-Assad helicopters targeted the Shaar and al-Haidariya sub-districts with barrel bombs, causing considerable material damage. No civilian casualties were reported,” a media activist from Aleppo told ARA News.

Syrian rebel fighters and pro-regime forces share control in the city of Aleppo. Mutual bombardment has been taking place for more than two years. Most of the civilian casualties are reportedly claimed by regime-fired barrel bombs over the war-torn city.
