Aleppo, Syria – At least 35 Syrian rebel fighters were killed and dozens more injured during a major offensive by militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) in Aleppo province, north Syria, activists reported on Sunday.

Heavy clashes broke out between rebel fighters and IS militants in Umm Housh village in the northern countryside of Aleppo on Sunday morning.

“More than 35 rebels were killed and dozens were injured when Daesh (IS) attacked headquarters of the rebel forces in Umm Housh village,” a rebel source told ARA News in Aleppo.

The heavy losses in the rebels’s ranks obliged them to withdraw from the village towards Aleppo city.

“Umm Housh is now under the control of Daesh militants,” the source said.

Meanwhile, Syrian opposition sources revealed Sunday that at least 25 rebel fighters have been taken as hostages by IS militants after taking over Umm Housh village.
