TEL ABYAD – Radical group of the Islamic State (ISIS) has launched a car bomb attack in the city of Tel Abyad in Syria’s northern Raqqa province, killing at least ten civilians and wounding a dozen more, activists and security sources reported on Friday.

“ISIS jihadis infiltrated into Tel Abyad city and launched the attack, targeting a populated market downtown,” local activists told ARA News.

The blast claimed lives of ten civilians, including women and children, beside injuring 11 others.

Since the liberation of Tel Abyad city at the hands of the Kurdish YPG forces and allied fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) nearly a year ago, ISIS jihadis have succeeded to infiltrate into the city several times, launching suicide attacks and killing dozens of civilians.

Kurdish security forces of the Asayish, in cooperation with local committees, have installed new security checkpoints around the city to prevent future attacks by ISIS.

Speaking to ARA News, Sharon Gire Spi, a Kurdish security officer in Tel Abyad, said: “We have deployed heavy weapons at the security checkpoints in Tel Abyad. We have also intensified our patrols across the city, especially in the night, with the support of local people.”

“Any suspected vehicle is being carefully checked by our Asayish security forces in coordination with the YPG and the local committees. We are trying to eliminate ISIS terrorism in the city,” he said.

Mustafa Muhammad, a police officer in Tel Abyad, said: “We are coordinating the traffic here and we prevent any vehicle from stopping in public places. This gives a more secure feeling among the people. We are also checking any vehicle that enters Tel Abyad to prevent any potential attacks.”
