DERIK Militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) launched a mortar attack on a security checkpoint for the pro-regime forces in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor province, activists reported on Sunday.

At least nine regime forces were killed when ISIS militants hit a security checkpoint with mortar shells in the Tharda village in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

“ISIS has also carried out a car bomb attack on a security centre for the pro-regime troops in the province, killing and wounding scores of pro-regime security forces,” local media activist Samer al-Khalaf told ARA News.

On the other hand, the Syrian army responded to ISIS offensive by launching an artillery attack on the group’s strongholds in the Hamidiya district of Deir ez-Zor on Sunday evening. It was not immediately clear how many militants were killed in the attack.

This comes as the Islamic State fighters try to impose control over regime-held areas in Deir ez-Zor, including its key military airbase.
