Aleppo – The Kurdish National Council in Syria (KNC) on Tuesday condemned the Turkish bombardment of populated districts in Aleppo Governorate. The council explicitly demanded that the Turkish Army stop killing civilians.

Turkey’s military and allied Syrian rebel groups have launched an offensive against the pro-Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) based in Afrin District. According to local activists, dozens of civilians have been killed and wounded.

“Turkish aggression claimed lives of dozens of innocent civilians in Jinderis town […] and other populated districts in Aleppo,” the KNC said in a statement.

“We condemn the Turkish actions in Syria, and demand the Turkish government withdraw its forces from Aleppo countryside,” the Kurdish council added. “[Turkey must] stop supporting radical groups that have been massacring civilians and spreading terror.”

The KNC said that while Turkey claims that its intervention in Syria is meant to protect its national security and combat terrorism, its “actions proved otherwise.”

“The Turkish Army and allied Islamist rebels have been killing civilians, carrying out indiscriminate shelling and airstrikes on populated areas,” the council said.

Sirur Musa, a KNC member in Aleppo, told ARA News that Turkey has intensified its attacks on Kurdish areas, in a bid to destabilise Syria’s Kurdish region. “Since its military intervention into Syria began, three months ago, Turkey has been mainly focused on hitting areas held by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units and allied Syrian Democratic Forces,” he said.

According to Musa, Turkey has been intentionally bombing Kurdish civilians to punish them for supporting the YPG and SDF, even though “those factions proved to be the most effective in the war on ISIS.”
