Raqqa – More than 5,000 civilians were displaced from Raqqa Governorate during the first week of the Euphrates Wrath Operation. Local officials told ARA News that they expect the number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to increase dramatically as the war zone expands.

A delegation from Northern Syria – Rojava (NSR) has been visiting with displaced Arab families. The envoys include Kurdish politicians, Arab tribal leaders and humanitarian aid workers.

The delegation is on site to assess the situation first hand and ensure that the displaced civilians receive immediate assistance. NSR officials told ARA News that most of the IDPs had fled north, seeking shelter in areas held by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Nisrin Ebdullah, a Women’s Protection Units spokesperson, told ARA News that the IDPs would be treated equitably. “Whatever the enemies of humanity do to separate the people and plant sedition among the communities in this region, they’ll never succeed,” she said.

“The people of this region are united on all levels against terror and tyranny. [The delegation’s] visit proves how much we care about each other,” Ebdullah added.

Ebdulselam Ehmed, a Kurdish NSR official, told ARA News that while the administration’s intentions were good, their capabilities were limited. “As everyone knows, we are suffering an embargo from different sides [and] winter is approaching,” he said.

Ehmed said that the “IDPs needed urgent assistance” and called on the international community to provide humanitarian aid.

The Syrian Democratic Forces have pushed the Islamic State out of more than 50 villages and farms since the start of the battle for Raqqa, last Sunday. Military sources told ARA News that the first phase of the operation is nearly complete.
